Meet Esra Soydan, L.Ac., Licensed Acupuncturist
A Personal Path to Chinese Medicine
Esra’s interest in Traditional Chinese Medicine began close to home. When a member of her family was living with an autoimmune condition, they started looking for ways to complement conventional medical care, and Chinese medicine entered the conversation. What stood out to Esra was how it looks at the whole person. Rather than focusing only on symptoms, it asks what might be contributing to a problem in the first place.
That perspective, along with its emphasis on supporting health before issues become more serious, stayed with her. It ultimately led Esra to pursue acupuncture as a career of her own.
Education and Training
Esra earned her Master of Acupuncture degree from Virginia University of Integrative Medicine, where her training included more than 500 hours of supervised clinical experience. She also provided acupuncture through Inova Life with Cancer, working with patients and caregivers affected by cancer. Today, Esra is a Virginia-licensed acupuncturist and a Diplomate of Acupuncture through the NCBAHM. Along with acupuncture, her training includes complementary techniques such as cupping, gua sha, moxibustion and tui na.
Care Built Around the Individual
For Esra, one of the most enjoyable parts of her work is getting to know each patient and figuring out what kind of care makes sense for their needs and goals. Two people may come in with a similar concern and end up with very different approaches, so she places real value on listening and problem-solving.
She also appreciates how broadly Chinese medicine can be applied. It gives her many ways to think about and support patients with very different health concerns, and she enjoys helping educate the community about the ways Chinese medicine may be used beyond pain management.
Outside the Practice
Family is at the center of Esra’s life, and she spends most of her free time with them. They love traveling together and discovering new places. At home, Esra enjoys gluten-free baking, experimenting with recipes and fine-tuning the balance of sweetness to create treats everyone can enjoy.
